A few words to explain ’cause this board gets semi-abstract.
The patterns were inspired by the day-to-day patterns that New Yorkers develop: from the trash collection, to police patrols, to Sean’s soup cruise, if you step back and look from afar, there is some order to all the chaos. The patterns on this board are a simplified graphic version of these routines. Each repeated pattern overlaps others to create new complex arrangements. The shapes these patterns are trapped in are half inspired by the silhouettes of the 5 boros and half inspired by Sol LeWitt’s “On the Roof: Splotches, Whirls, and Twirls” at The Metropolitain Museum of Art.
The Zoo York type evolved from Manhattans traffic grid. The pyramid is the simplest abstraction of Zoo York’s “Unbreakable” lyric. The triangle is the strongest structure on earth, can’t break that shit. The color palette is a very simple PMS 485, PMS 877, white, and PMS 476 for a little sophistication. The colors reflect the red and silver two color throw-ups of New York graffiti writers.

Best,
Nathan
